Chapter 8

Evelyn’s alarm went off at exactly 6 o’clock the shrill sound waking her from sleep.  Her tongue felt like it had been stomped on by a dirty boot, a slight hangover from the wine lingered, not enough to make her feel sick but enough to make her feel off.  Groaning she rolled out of bed, even on the best of mornings Evelyn wasn’t a morning person and the thought of a 18 or so hour drive was making her drag her feet.  Between loading up her car with luggage and spending the time to look presentable yet comfortable she didn’t get on the road until after 7.  She traveled well only making the necessary stops and made sure to call Winter around eight at night to tell her that she was checking into a hotel and that everything was well.  It was a little lie, but as far as lies go it was better for the both of them, that way Winter wouldn’t worry about Evelyn and Evelyn could get to where she was going before the night was over.

The last few hours of the trip were the worst for her, a little jittery from the caffeine she imbibed though out the day fatigue was setting in.  Windows rolled down and music blaring she didn’t pull down the dirt road until after two in the morning.  She called her mother several hours earlier to let her know how late she was going to be.  Her mother assured her that the door would be unlocked and that she would wait up for her daughter.  Evelyn found the place without any trouble even though it was her first time being there, she was grateful for the gps unit she had bought yet never really needed to use until now.  Her mothers new house was a beautiful two story farm house sitting on a big lovely plot of land.  Well in the dark it was actually hard to tell just how lovely the land was but Evelyn was sure it was.  She parked her small car in an empty space in the carport and got out stepping onto the gravel pathway.  Being out in the country for the first time Evelyn was surprised how bright the sky was with all the stars that she could never see while living in the city.  Between the stars and moon the porch light looked dim.  Evelyn grabbed her overnight bag, too tired to deal with the hassle of getting her luggage she walked up to the house, and because she was told it would be unlocked she didn’t stop to knock.  As she walked through the front door she took in the southwest décor and shook her head, it was definitely her mothers style.

“So do you always walk into someone’s home without knocking?”  Startled by the voice Evelyn visually jumped swallowing a scream she turned quickly.  A young man stood in the archway that lead to the kitchen, he leaned against the wall arms crossed, his handsome face set in a scowl.

“You must be Riley?”  Evelyn took a moment to look around for her mother who’d promised to wait up for her.

“Dad and Cecile went to bed and I figured I’d stay up to at least show you to the guest room so you wouldn’t accidently go into the wrong room, as humorous as that could be it could also be embarrassing for you.”  Riley’s rich brown eyes seemed almost bored like he had much better things to do then to wait up for her.

“Well that is very kind of you.”  Evelyn reached out a free hand as a gesture of goodwill and Riley seemed to shrug his broad shoulders before finally shaking her hand very delicately.   He’s a good looking kid, Evelyn thought to herself.  His average height made him tall to her short frame but not looming.  She could tell by his body langue that they were going to have the typical stepsibling issues and she was just too tired to reassure him that she wasn’t particularly fond of the situation either.

“You’re kind of short, are you sure you’re not adopted.”  Evelyn glared at him.  She was used to it, being short all her life, plus the looks she used to get when compared to her mother.  Her mother was like a Swedish goddess, golden haired, blue eyed, and legs that wouldn’t quit.  Evelyn was a contradiction short and curvy, her hair was dark and thick while her skin was smooth and pale, it was easy to see how it was hard to believe that she was her mothers daughter.

“Oh yes, teen angst, that never grows old now does it?”  Evelyn said dryly taking her hand back.

“Okay I guess I deserved that.”  Riley had the decency to look embarrassed and sheepishly rubbed the back of his neck and tried to grin.

“Yes, you did.”  Evelyn bent down to pick up her overnight bag but Riley quickly beat her to it.

“The guestroom, your room, is right across the hall from mine.  Upstairs is mostly Dad’s and Cecile domain.”

“Thank you for showing me to my room.”  Evelyn knew he was trying to make up for the earlier bratiness so she just let him knowing it may, for at least the night, smooth things over.  She followed him as he lead the way, once they got through the living room and down the hall to the bedroom Evelyn realized how isolated the house felt.  As Riley opened the bedroom door Evelyn wasn’t really all that surprised to see that it was also done in a southwest western motif and also decorated with horses.

“Wow, good luck sleeping in this room.”  Riley handed her bag back and shook his head.

“So it’s a safe bet your room doesn’t look like this?”  Evelyn asked teasingly.

“Oh it did when I first moved in, but believe me that lasted all of about three minutes.  Hey you wanna see?”  Riley’s face lit up and looked even younger.  As tired as Evelyn was she just couldn’t tell him no when he looked at her like that.

“Sure, but its going to be hard to top this fabulous room.”  Evelyn placed her bag by the door and went across the hall to Riley’s room.  To say it was a typical guys room would’ve been a huge understatement.  The walls were painted a dark forest green, it was actually not as harsh as it should have been.  The bed was a huge dark mass up against the far wall, Evelyn guessed probably a king size.  A few music and movie posters were up on the walls but what really caught Evelyn’s eye and made her actually enter the room was the small collage of black and white abstract photos in basic black frames.

“I took those.”  Riley said as he came up behind her standing a little too close.

“They are very impressive.”  Evelyn turned around in time to watch Riley blush and back away.

“Hey, you made it here in pretty good time, I bet you really didn’t stop much along the way.”

“Yeah didn’t want to get stuck having to stay in a hotel for the night.”

“Are you hungry?  I could make you something.”

“I’m really too tired to be hungry right now Riley, but if you want to you could make me breakfast in the morning.”  Evelyn leaned forward and got on her toes and kissed him gently on the cheek, it was all she could do to not laugh a little when she saw just how bright he blushed.  Quickly she excused herself and left him speechless going back across the hall and into the guest room.  Once behind the closed door she let out a little chuckle and shook her head.  She had to admit he was cute and even there were moments she could consider him handsome even though he was still in that awkward stage, no longer a boy but still not yet a man.    She knew the new family thing and the marriage was wearing on him but for the most part he was trying to get along with her and for that she appreciated it.  Shaking her head one last time Evelyn stripped down to her underwear and crawled into the small full size bed, promising herself a shower once she woke.

Across the hall was a different story for Riley, he was pacing his room and lightly rubbing the side of his face where Evelyn kissed him.  She wasn’t what he had expected at all, he assumed she’d just be a younger version of her mother in both looks and attitude and now he knew we was wrong.  He pulled off his shirt and fell back onto his bed staring up at the ceiling mind still unsettled.  She wasn’t mean but didn’t put up with his bullshit and he still felt bad for how he at first came off.  He just wanted to assert himself but he felt so bad about the adoption joke.  He noticed how her face fell as she walked through the door and saw him, how she took a moment to look around.  He knew that look, she had been hoping her mother was waiting up for her and his heart did go out for her on that.  But she sucked it up well and tried really hard to be just a friendly face around him.  Her body though was enough to do him in.

Riley’s hand wandered down his chest and over his stomach lightly caressing as his mind wondered over Evelyn’s soft curves.  The way her dark green eyes seemed to look right through him and the feel of her soft lips just lightly brushing against the skin of his cheek.  His hand slipped under the waistband of his boxers, he took a moment to feel slightly guilty about the thoughts that were bringing him such pleasure but by the time his hand wrapped around his thickening cock those thoughts were long gone.  A soft moan escaped his lips and he promised himself he’d find a way to be with Evelyn, to touch and taste her, to have her cry out his name in pleasure as she squirmed passionately beneath him.  His hips arched and lifted off the bed as he pistoned himself in and out of his fist, it wasn’t long until he moaned out Evelyn’s name as he came hard enough to blur his vision, his body tightened and then gave a shiver before relaxing.
